This course focuses on the nature of prophecy in ancient Israel and its background in the cultures of the ancient Near East. Special attention is given to the genres of prophetic oracles and the theology of the prophetic books. Though the whole range of prophecy will be considered, the prophets of the Babylonian exile, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Second Isaiah, will be considered in particular depth. Special attention will be given to the theology of the prophetic books, and to the genres of prophetic oracles and the methods that may be employed for their interpretation. An introduction to the Psalms as the product of Israel?s cultic life completes the course.
