Description
This class is designed as a seminar/research course for advanced students. The objectives are to introduce students to the crucial role of women in the American mission enterprise, to study some key issues affecting women in 19th century mission fields, to acquaint students with mission primary source materials and prmote their use in hsitorical research. We will cover the primary source context of women in the 19th century and the issues they faced as they entered the mission field; the origins and early history of the American missionary movement and the role of women in it, some key mission debates concerning native cultural practices and how women, in particular, confronted these; and look at the impact key women had upon missionary organization and strategy.
