Description
This course will address the intersection of race and American Christianity from the 18th Century through the present. Thinking first through theoretical approaches to race, the course will familiarize students with scholarly understandings of race as located in particular contexts, contingent upon cultural, economic, and political power, and thus constantly shifting. Then, via an exploration of white and black American experiences, the course will follow a historical trajectory of the intersection of race and Christianity over three centuries, paying attention to ecclesial tradition, theological convictions, and gender.
