In "City of God," Augustine writes of ?the book of the twelve prophets, who are called the minor from the brevity of their writings, as compared with those who are called the greater [maiores] prophets because they published larger volumes.? For Augustine, the distinction of the ?Minor? Prophets from the ?Major? ones was a matter of length only, not of significance. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the contemporary church! Many Christians have never read from, or heard a sermon preached on, the ?Minor? Prophets, let alone studied them. This course will consider these prophetic books, better referred to by their ancient designation as the Book of the Twelve, viewing each book in its likely historical and social setting. However, scholarship on the Book of the Twelve has in recent years increasingly turned toward seeing this entire corpus as a book: an intentional, unified whole, rather than a mere collection.
